How to use videos in an Instagram Story layout

By · Updated

Instagram’s Layout takes photos only, so it won’t put your videos in a grid. To get several videos playing at the same time on one screen, combine them into one 9:16 video first, then post that video as your story.

Instagram’s own Stories guide describes Layout as a grid of up to 6 photos. Its “select multiple” option does take videos, but they play one after another, in the order you picked them.

Storyvids makes that one video in your browser. Pick a grid, put a video or a photo in each cell, and save one MP4. Nothing uploads, and there is no account or watermark.

Steps

  1. 01

    Pick a grid

Open the editor and tap the layout button. The 2 × 2 grid holds four clips. Two rows or two columns hold two, three rows hold three, and the 2 × 3 grid holds six. There are 8 layouts in all.

  2. 02

Put a video in each cell

Tap a cell to pick a video or a photo. Select several files at once and they fill the empty cells in order. To film a clip right there, turn on the camera and hold the shutter.

  3. 03

    Frame each clip

Drag inside a cell to move the video, and pinch or scroll to zoom. Each cell crops its clip to fit, so keep faces inside the cell.

  4. 04

    Save one MP4

Tap the check mark, pick 1080p for posting, and download. Every clip plays at the same time in the saved video, and the sound from each one is mixed in.

  5. 05

    Post it as your story

Open Instagram and add the video to your story from your camera roll. It is already 9:16, so it fills the screen with no black bars.

Why Layout won’t take your videos

Layout is built for photos. Instagram’s help page lists it as a way to combine photos, and its Stories guide says it splits a story frame into a grid of up to 6 photos. To show several clips on one screen, they have to be one video before you post.

What “select multiple” does instead

In the Stories gallery, “select multiple” lets you pick up to 10 photos or videos at once. They post in the order you picked them, and each one plays on its own, one after another.

What about Collage?

Instagram’s Collage also works from photos: it arranges 5 or more of them into an animated collage. For moving clips side by side, combine the videos first.

Photos and videos together

Each cell in Storyvids takes a photo or a video, so you can mix them in any layout. A photo next to moving clips gives the eye a place to rest. The saved file is an MP4 as long as one cell holds a video.

Keep the longest clip under 60 seconds

Instagram plays a story clip for up to 60 seconds and splits a longer video into back-to-back clips. The saved video runs as long as your longest clip, and shorter clips loop, so pick clips under 60 seconds to keep the whole grid in one story.
