Split-screen video for Instagram Stories
A split screen puts two videos in one story. Stack them as two rows, one above the other, or set them next to each other as two columns. Pick the split that fits the shape of your clips.

Two rows: one video on top, one below
Each row is 1080 × 960 at 1080p, a little taller than square. A landscape clip keeps the middle 63% of its width, and a portrait clip keeps the middle half of its height. Both shapes work, so rows are the safe split when you mix clips filmed upright and sideways.
Rows read from top to bottom, like cause and effect. Viewers look at the top row first, so put the clip that sets up the story there and the payoff below it.
Good for
- A reaction: the clip on top, your face below
- Before and after
- Two people on a call or in a duet
Two columns: two videos side by side
Each column is a tall strip of 540 × 1920 at 1080p. A portrait clip keeps its full height and the middle half of its width, so a person filmed upright fits from head to toe. A landscape clip keeps only a narrow slice of its middle here.
Columns read as a comparison. The eye jumps left and right between the two clips, so line up what you compare. Drag each clip until the two subjects stand at the same height and the same size.
Good for
- This one or that one: a poll in video
- Two outfits, two dishes or two takes
- A workout next to the tutorial
Tips
Rows or columns?
Check how you held the phone. Clips filmed sideways belong in rows. Clips of people filmed upright belong in columns. With one clip of each kind, pick rows: both shapes keep more of their frame there.
Switch the split and keep your clips
Change between two rows and two columns in the editor’s layout picker at any time. Your clips stay put: the top clip moves to the left column, and the bottom clip moves to the right.
Two soundtracks at once
The export mixes the sound of both halves. For a reaction, talk less than the clip you react to, or the two voices fight. For a comparison, a photo in one half leaves the other clip’s sound alone.
